Yes, I hacked .asoundrc. Just seeing if I was doing the right thing, I.E.,
asking if this was how everyone else did it.
For the curious, here's my .asoundrc:

name 'musicvol'

}

Then, I have the following in ~/.mplayer/config:
ao=alsa:device=softvol
In .emacs: (setq emms-player-list '(emms-player-mplayer))
All works well, it seems.
amixer set musicvol X # Sets music volume, independently of the synth.
