emacspeak and erc

Now that I succeded installing emacspeak from svn on Debian sid I want
to use it with erc, the emacs irc client. I can hear what people have
said before, when i move the cursor upwards. But i want it to be spoken
when a new message drops in without my interaction. I have customized
'Emacspeak Erc Speak All Participants' to on for current session, but
I still cannot hear incoming messages. What do I do wrong?

Maybe I start it wrong? I use 'erc-select' to start erc.
