I believe this is a bug in alsa 1.0.16. The extent to which you are impacted appears to depend on your sound hardware. My box with SB Live is only slightly affected, but the box with a SB Audigy 4 card is highly impacted and at times nearly unusable. If you find it really bad, downgrade to the earlier version.
