Just some more info that may be useful for everyone. 

I've been trying to install emacspeak on a ubuntu 8.10 intrepid box for the
last couple of days and have run into some problems as well. It seems that
the version of libtool that comes with this version of ubuntu (libtool
2.2.4) has some significant changes compared to the version on earlier
ubuntu/debian systems (libtool 1.4 or 1.5). In particular, the atcleci.so
shared library doesn't build and you get errors because libtool tries to
build an executable rather than the shared library. 

I'm still looking into this and have managed to get it to build the shared
library, but only by changing the libtool command in ways that are not
going to be ocmpatible with what emacpseak requies. For example, it seems
that shared libraries must start with lib e.g. libatcleci.so and you must
have an output in the command of libatcleci.la (you get both a static and
shared library). 

I will look into this further over the next few days and will let you all
know what I find out.

Note also that I've cleaned up the langswitch.cpp and atcleci.cpp files so
that we no longer get any warnings when they are built. Will post the
updated versions to the list.

Sorry if this seems a bit garbled - in a rush and have to go now.....For
those of you who can't wait, you could build the atcleci.so/tcleci.so files
without libtool if you just use the necessary switches to g++ i.e. the old
fashioned way.
