As far as I can recall, unibyte is no longer required for emacspeak if running emacs version 23 or later. A recent post to the emacs bug list indicates that from emacs 23.2, setting unibyte has no effect and the command line switches for enabling unibyte will be removed in emacs 24. However, if you are still running emacs earlier than version 23, you may still need this setting.
