My suspicion is that the different architectures (orca/speech-dispatcher v
emacspeak-espeak) reveals the issue. I had not noticed any issues with espeak
until I needed to use it with emacspeak. When I did, the problem was resolved
by re-building espeak to use pulseaudio rather than portaudio. I don't use orca
or speech dispatcher and have found that espeak with emacspeak is pretty much
unusable unless espeak is re-built with the pulseaudio support.

The steps looked correct. I also install espeak in the standard location
i.e. /usr and not /usr/local. The only difference I can see between your setup
and mine is that you are running vinux while I'm stock standard Ubuntu 11.04
and you have orca etc installed while I only have espeak. We seemt o be running
the same versions of espeak and built/installed in the same ways.
