I beleive that the hook does not exist in emacs 23. I'm running emacs
24 and cannot verify for certain, but the hood does appear to be first
mentioned in the NEWS file for emacs 24.

I think Raman committed a fix for this, so perhaps another update and
rebuild from svn would fix the issue. Alternatively, get the emacs
soures from bzr and build emacs 24 - I find it quite stable, though
you will get small glitches from time to time. Usually, they are fixed
in a day or two.
