emacs and playing chess

Searching on Google, some time ago people were discussing in this list 
the possibility to play chess on emacs using a special mode, which 
allows to solve puzzles, play online  and some other features.

has anyone managed to do that? Some messages mentioned the possibility 
to write support for emacspeak as well, was this written?
