Multiple languages on the mac?

Has anyone been able to get emacspeak to switch from English to an alternative language (e.g. Italian) using the native TTS?  Alternatively, has anyone been able to get epeak to run under recent versions of OSX?

And finally, I'm having difficulty finding where emacspeak actually interacts with the TTS server -- is there any documentation, or at least a pointer to where the rubber hits the road?
