Mentioned this on another thread, but the sox support along with the NSSpeechSynthesizer api grabbing the audio bytes for a given utterance was meant to be experimental.

It's better performance and stability wise to let the underlying Apple framework do the playback. That's the default setup prior to the recent commit to the Mac server. i.e. if you don't have pysox installed.
