[Emacspeak] No speech on Mac

Hello,

I'm new to Emacs.

I'm attempting to use Emacspeak on the latest Mac OS. I hear the initial 
Emacspeak startup sound effect and some speech, but then no speech at 
all. I've heard of a workaround involving pressing ctrl-x left to move 
to a scratch buffer and holding up which works but feels really clunky.

Is there a more reliable way of getting speech to happen immediately on 
the mac?

I've tested the Macspeak server manually and it works perfectly standalone.
