shell trouble?

I have a new Slackware release with Emacs 20.3 which I compiled myself.  I
do "m-x" shell then export the terminal as vt100.  It seems to read at the
shell prompt OK, but if I do a "man" on something it speaks escape
sequences in the output.  Is this normal?  I am using the Doubletalk driver
which is written in C.  It seems there is something wrong with the TCLX on
this machine.  It is Emacspeak 7.
