I'm away on a trip so this wil be a short answer.

Dont use eterm mode except for running screen oriented
programs.
Over time you will use less and less non emacs tools.
for man pages, use M-x man
it is a heck of a lot better than running man in a terminal
buffer.
As brian said, use M-x shell for doing shel things.
