It is certainly possible to compile and install Emacs 20.2 from the source
archive, but an easier approach would be to obtain a pre-compiled rpm
package from the Red Hat Linux ftp site (ftp://ftp.redhat.com/) or one of
its mirrors. Check both the "updates" directory for your version of Emacs,
and the contrib directory. In one of these you will find an rpm package
suitable for your platform. Use rpm -Uvh <file names> to install the Emacs
packages.
There will be several RPM packages involved: one contains the LISP code
required by Emacs, and then there are two alternative binary packages.
The choice of which to install depends on whether the X-Window system has
been installed onto your computer. The file names are self-explanatory.
There was a recent report on another mailing list to the effect that some
people have encountered difficulty with the version that runs without
X-Windows.
Alternatively, you can unpack the source archive into a temporary
directory: tar xfz <filename.tar.gz> and then follow the installation
instructions that are included with the software. Essentially, you would
first run the configure script to set any necessary options, execute make
in order to compile the source code, and then issue a "make install"
command (as the super user) in order to install Emacs in a default
location, which can be changed by editing the makefile.
I once compiled Emacs on a Unix system and it worked without difficulty.
Although I do not know C, actually compiling software can, if you are
lucky, be a quite straightforward task that does not require familiarity
with the source code and the language in which it is written.
I hope this advice is of some help.
Jason.
