Thanks to Raman who helped to showed me the errors of my ways!
I was using "C-e A" which seems to be the wrong command,
(emacspeak-appt-repeat-announcement)
Speaks the most recently displayed appointment message if any.
Does not work, however "C-e a" is what I should have been using
(emacspeak-speak-message-again)
Speak the last message from Emacs once again.
"C-e a" works as it should.
