In the Emacspeak documentation there is a procedure for testing the speech
server independently from Emacspeak itself:
tcl /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/emacspeak/servers/server-name
whatever the name of the speech server is for your particular synthesizer.

Try this testing procedure and identify any error messages that arise.
