Artic Talking (Windows) Computer

I just received an email announcement from Artic about a new "talking
computer" they are selling for $999 ... and considering the best price
I can do on a ViaVoice/Linux computer is just under $700 (which means
using VV illegally and ignoring the installation/configuration service
charges) 

I'm curious: Does anyone have any experience with these machines
and/or with the software or hardware components they use.  Can any of
this be adapted to lower the price of a BLinux computer?  ... The
package is said to be based on the WinVision Screen Reader and "DEC
Access 32 speech" whatever that is.

They also have an OCR package, and having done some evaluation of the
Vividata kit for Linux, this seems simple enough to do except that I
am having trouble finding a low-cost flatbed scanner that will work
with Linux.  Any recommendations?
