       I have had no trouble with my laptop and emacspeak with viavoice.  It is a toshiba Satellite 2515.  I have put just about every distro on it.  I just put conectiva on it and have something wrong with the config now, but I figure it is my fault.

I would think most will work.  Some do have sound problems, but with dectalk that should not matter.  For good info go to http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/
