w3 html debugging

folks, i have noticed that w3 bombs on some pages and says "no buttons
or fields found".  i got this when visiting http://www.fiu.edu/ for
example.

the emacs messages buffer contained "Arithmetic error" but that does
not tell me much.

my understanding is that;

(setq w3-debug-html t)

should give me some output as to the trouble.  however, i get no
such debug buffer.

this is called after w3 is loaded.

am i missing something here?  w3 version is 4.0 pre 46.
