Ok, I confess at the start I've just changed too many things at once,
new machine, new sound architecture, new linux, new viavoice, new emacs and new emacspeak.
Machine: Dell Latitude L400 (cute little thing) which has a Crystal
Semi' CS4281 sound chip
Linux: RH7.1 (kernel 2.4.2
Sound software: commercial OSS, latest download
emacs 20.7
emacspeak 14.0-1
Oh bother, I'm away from the machine now and didn't check the viavoice
version, it will also be the most recent version I expect.
Two problems:
1) speech stops *very* frequently. tts-restart always restarts it
but while I might need to do this every 15 minutes on my current
machine it's happening once a minute on the new box.
2) moving by character etc is always one character behind as far as I
can tell. I seem to remember this one popping up on the mailing list
but a trawl through the archive this morning didn't find it.
Problem 1 I expect is some interaction of VV with the sound system,
I'm also noticing the odd click etc at the end of phrases. I don't
claim to understand the OSS yet so there might be things to tweak in
there.
Problem 2 has me slightly more mystified. There was the following in
the compile log buffer
----------------------------------------------------------------------
** reference to free variable
emacspeak-backward-delete-char-speak-deleted-char
** reference to free variable
emacspeak-backward-delete-char-speak-current-char
** reference to free variable
emacspeak-backward-delete-char-speak-deleted-char
** reference to free variable
emacspeak-backward-delete-char-speak-current-char
----------------------------------------------------------------------
but a brief attempt to generate a backtrace didn't seem to work for
some reason.
At this point I'll take suggestions if anyone has one.
I'll also have another look at soft-oss and esd to see if this 700MHz
machine can multiplex sound, but first things first ...
thanks again
Peter Rayner
