ERC and Emacspeak problems

Hi,

 

I recently installed Erc to try and get on the university IRC scene.  I typed m-x erc-select, and then entered the server/port/username/password as requested.  I can type something and others will see it.  If someone else writes something my computer beeps but nothing else appears in the buffer and no new buffers appear.  If anyone has used Erc before then please could you contact me sshaik@xxxxxxxxxxx.

 

Unfortunately the Erc package for Debian comes with absolutely no documentation other than a copyright notice.
