thanks raman.
you are indeed correct that i am running outloud and also i do use the
soundblaster-live card which is multi channel capable.
so i went ahead and customized for this and the icons seem to be
working correctly now.
i'd like to call attention to one detail however that i think lead to
my confusion.
this is, that the emacspeak-aumix customization group does not seem to
be a child of group emacspeak.
in other words, i had to call it explicitly. it was not found by a
thorough browse down from the main emacspeak custom buffer.
