speech server goes silent

Well, the subject about says it all.

With every server I've tried (braillenspeak, doubletalk, now
viavoice), this happens.  At seamingly-random times, the server will
just stop talking.  I have to bring it back with "c-e c-s".  The
frequency of the outages is least with viavoice.  

Any ideas appreciated.
