Let's see have you got apm running? RedHat installs that and it's designed
to save power on laptops and notebook computers. That could be causing
these silent periods. The program monitors keyboard activity and after a
certain time without it it goes into action. Other versions of linux may
have different named applications that do the same as apm and apmd.
