Hi,
Sun Microsystems Laboratories recently released a Java-based synthesizer called
FreeTTS, available for free at http://sourceforge.net/projects/freetts . It
requires JDK 1.4, and there is an implementation of a simple emacspeak speech
server. It is based on Flite 1.1, a small run-time speech synthesis engine
developed at Carnegie Mellon University. Flite itself is derived from Festival.
FreeTTS is faster than flite, and runs on any platform that supports Java.
