What was the compilation error exactly? Perhaps it should be reported
to the Festival Lite mailing list.

As to the other question, most Linux distributions come with two
versions of GNU Emacs, one that requires XFree86 libraries in order to
run, and another which doesn't. It used to be - and probably still is
the case, however, that the keyboard support provided by the non-X
version isn't as good as that which is available from the non-X
version.

The difference between the two versions is simply a matter of the
options that were chosen when the packages were compiled from source.
