Hi, I actually solved the flite problem. Actually, my copy of alsa was 
much
newer than the one the designed for. My solution is uninstall the alsa 
libs, and build flite with the oss libs.
Once flite is linked against the oss libs, and installed you can reinstall 
the alsa libs.
Btw. Flite works great with emacspeak now, and works ok with alsa the 
latest version as long as you link flite with the oss libs.
