You should also be able to specify --with-audio=oss
at the configure script for flite.
Note about alsa and flite-1.1: Alan W. Black wrote
to me in response to some bugreport explaining that the ALSA drivers in
flite-1.1 are really just QNX sound drivers, they never worked for linux ALSA.
