This may or may not be relevant, and I know nothing about speech
synthesis, but when developing eflite I noticed that flite seemed somewhat
sluggish because, for whatever reason, it inserts about 1/10 sec of
effective silence before and after the audible speech (it may vary with
rate). So I have it avoid playing the very beginning and end of the
generated speech.
