emacspeak stops speaking after a few words

Hi all

I installed emacspeak on a debian based system using the DEC-talk 
software. I used a howTo written by Nath.

The test for the speech server provided there works. Emacspeak starts
but stops after a few words.

When I  do
ps -aux
I see about 10 entries for dtk-soft.
Somehow the speech server seems not to execute the calls properly.
The system I'm using is rather slow (233Mhz, 96MB RAM, SoundBlaster 
card) but I'm using it in text mode.

What would you suggest to fix this problem?
