software dectalk issues

Hello,
I am trying to get the software dectalk to work with emacspeak 18.
When I run the speech server through TCL, I get the welcome message.
However, when I run emacspeak with the -d switch, I get no speech and my cpu usage goes through the roof.  It looks like something is getting hung up somewhere.
Any ideas?
