DEC-talk server incredibly flaky

the combination with alsa makes this interesting to debug;
Incidentally I'm running an FC3 AMD 64 machine at home and will
install dtk 5.0 on it  at some point.

But first check if the dectalk is using OSS emulation which is
what I suspect it is doing.

Also, check if you have any .asoundrc file in your home directory
that will also influence how your  personal alsa environment
functions. 

Finally, run some regression tests without emacspeak of the
speech server --- send it some commands in a pipe and see what
happens.

I suspect that somewhere in the end-to-end chain, the alsa/oss
emulation is hanging and the dtk is not clearing is queues
correctly and causing the core dumps that you're seeing.
