I am not (yet) a Ubuntu user myself, but there is a script
that installs all the interesting multimedia packages that cannot
be shipped with Ubuntu for various reasons: (like mplayer)

There used to be ascript called Automatics that did a similar job, but
it appears to be no longer available.
