Jim,

I had the same trouble when starting out with Emacspeak, running a BNS
640 on ttyS0.  Try setting the permissions on 'ttyS1' as shown here.
Below is my listing of 'ttyS0'.  

<begin> ls -l /dev/ttyS0 crw-rw-rw-   1 root     tty        4,  64 Dec
11 13:46 /dev/ttyS0 <end>

This brings to mind an unanswered question of mine.  My Eterm will
work properly onlyh when I'm logged in as 'root'.  Otherwise, I see
none of my input and some of the output.  What has the wrong
permissions here?
