I don't know whether to say this one is solved or not since there seem to be problems I can't explain. The bottom line, for me anyway, is that I am now back in the X environment. My last issue, process speaker not running, was a permissions/groups issue. Audio worked on the console, allowing me to use emacspeak, but it did not work in X. Disabling gdm and adding myself to the audio group did the trick. Thanks to everyone who helped, rdc -- Robert D.
