Yeah, get rid of pulse! I never hear anything good about pulse audio.
I know Ubuntu forces it on you guys though.  So I don't know how to
get around this.  I Use ALSA exclusively here on my Arch linux system
and it works pretty well.  I only have one particular issue with the
espeak server and emacspeak and that's to do with changing pitch when
arrowing over individual letters in a file.  It doesn't change pitch
like I want.
