After building with AUDIO=runtime, the version of wave_init() which is called is the one in src/wave.cpp:759 that invokes PortAudio, not the wrapper function earlier in the file that checks for PulseAudio. Thus we end up writing to Alsa directly, which as I mentioned may indirectly invoke Pulse.
