Hi Dhruv, You mentioned math and writing. I use R a lot for data cleaning, analysis, and writing on a Mac with Emacspeak. There's an Emacs package called Emacs Speaks Statistics that customizes Emacs for R, and a package called Polymode that helps with creating markdown documents.
