there is a very nice mpg123.el that provides an emacs
interface to the mpg123 player --mpg123.el was posted to
usenet a while ago
and works very well with the newest releases of mpg123.
It works pretty nicely without a speech-enabling extension
--though I'll probably add something in the next release of
emacspeak if I find myself using it a lot.
