I think your idea is worthwhile. Though I would suggest not to do it
as a particular feature but rather as a generalization of existing
functionality. You've mentioned column filter, why not to invent yet
another, alternative filter? A filter splitting the line through the
call to split-string function and allowing user to specify which
fields to speak and in what order might do the trick. Then yet one
filter performing regexp replace on the line before speaking it might
also be useful in some circumstances. Then one might to consider a
possibility to give names to various filters. Then to combine filters
under some class of operations...

the potential is near to being unlimited.
