Emacspeak and apollo server
Andrea,
Are you running emacspeak under X windows on Mandrake? If so, it is
possible the left and right arrow keys may be defined as hot keys for
your window manager. If this is the case, emacs will never see the
left/right arrows as they will be swalloed by the window
manager. Another possible cause could be either you don't have the
correct keyboard selected and your X server believes it is usin a
keybord which either does not have arrow keys or one which uses a
different code for the arrow keys.
If you are running on the Linux console, it is possible your console
termcap entry is not correct.
Do you know if the right/left arrow keys work for other applications?
I don't run Mandrake, but I did for a short time a couple of years
ago. I don't like the distribution very much - it is one which is very
much oriented towards an X windows environment and is quite customized
for a nice flashy visual X experience, which is pretty much wasted on
most emacspeak users. I also found the default Mandrake site init
file had some customizations which conflicted with emacspeak (for
example, at that time, emacspeak couldn't handle transient mark mode
very well, but it does now). From memory, the Mandrake site init file
for emacs sets up pc selection keys and a few other things to make
emacs feel like a winblows system. It is possible there might be
something in the site init file which could be screwing with
emacspeak.
Something you could try is use C-h k and then hit the left or right
arrow key. This should tell you what function that key is bound to. It
should report emacspeak-backward-char or emacspeak-forward-char. If it
reports something different, then I would strongly suspect something
in the site init file is redefining the key binding. From memory, the
site init files for emacs are in /etc/emacs/site-lisp.d.
With respect to C-h t not bringing up the emacs tutorial - would
report this to Mandrake as it sounds like a bug in their emacs
package. You could also have a look in /usr/share/emacs/<version>/etc
where version is the version of emacs you are running e.g. 21.2. This
is where the emacs tutorial file should be if it is installed. If it
is, then you can just read it in a buffer. make sure you check the
Mandrake site for any package updates which need to be applied - its
possible your problems are due to a bug in the ackage/distribution
which they are aware of and have released fixes for.
