Okay, I think I have everything set up right.        Emacspeak doesn't start when I open Emacs, though. Does this mean I did something wrong, or is there a certain way to start Emacspeak?

On 4/28/24 20:54, Tim Cross wrote:
It is a little convoluted because emacs and linux has evolved and
preferences for config file locations have changed. Emacs
likes to maintain backwards compatibility. This means there are multiple
possible locations for a user initialisation file and even multiple
different names.

Under modern XDG style setups, the configuration file is
~/.config/emacs/init.el and in older setups it is often in
~/.emacs.d/init.el (this is what I have). Note that ~/ is shorthand for
your home directory.

For more detailed explanation, I have included some info from the Emacs
manual below.

51.4 The Emacs Initialization File
==================================

When Emacs is started, it normally tries to load a Lisp program from an
“initialization file”, or “init file” for short. This file, if it
exists, specifies how to initialize Emacs for you. Traditionally, file
‘~/.emacs’ is used as the init file, although Emacs also looks at
‘~/.emacs.el’, ‘~/.emacs.d/init.el’, ‘~/.config/emacs/init.el’, or other
locations. *Note Find Init::.

and

51.4.4 How Emacs Finds Your Init File
-------------------------------------

Emacs normally finds your init file in a location under your home
directory(1). *Note Init File::.

Emacs looks for your init file using the filenames ‘~/.emacs.el’,
‘~/.emacs’, or ‘~/.emacs.d/init.el’ in that order; you can choose to use
any one of these names. (Note that only the locations directly in your
home directory have a leading dot in the location’s basename.)

Emacs can also look in an XDG-compatible location for ‘init.el’, the
default is the directory ‘~/.config/emacs’. This can be overridden by
setting ‘XDG_CONFIG_HOME’ in your environment, its value replaces
‘~/.config’ in the name of the default XDG init file. However
‘~/.emacs.d’, ‘~/.emacs’, and ‘~/.emacs.el’ are always preferred if they
exist, which means that you must delete or rename them in order to use
the XDG location.

Note also that if neither the XDG location nor ‘~/.emacs.d’ exist,
then Emacs will create ‘~/.emacs.d’ (and therefore use it during
subsequent invocations).

Emacs will set ‘user-emacs-directory’ to the directory it decides to
use.

I managed to finally build the eSpeak server and added some things from the
Emacspeak installation instructions to my .
bashrc file, which is the closest thing I could find to .bash_profile, the
file the instructions mention. I'm now looking for the .
emacs file. Can anyone give me any pointers as to where this might be?

OK, we have progress. That is a different error.

It looks like your missing the tcl packages. I don't know exactly what
they are called on Ubuntu, but you essentially need the packages tcl,
tcl-devel (or tcl-dev or something similar) and tclx.
