Hi,
I'm going to compare configs when I get to my laptop, because I also wasn't able to reproduce this with Swiftmac.
2 things to help reduce the complexity:
Can you try the same with the latest changes in Swiftmac, and the python mac speech server?
Also, can you check the *Messages* buffer to see if any messages get produced that don't get spoken? This happens for me often when I have a fresh install of Emacs and Emacspeak.

Wow, this is really amazing because I am observing this behavior on a completely fresh install of Emacspeak. I wonder if I am possibly missing some libraries that I should have installed with homebrew?
By any chance, are our Mac configurations close?

I am unable to reproduce, these are the steps I tried:

- open emacs
- C-e m, speaks modeline
- C-e d p, switch to some
- C-e m, speaks modeline
